GAITUZSPORT at the 17th International Congress of the Spanish Association of Social Research Applied to Sport

  • The GaituzSport Communication “Woman, Disability and Physical-Sports Practice” chosen as the best by the Congress doctors.
  • It is essential for disABLED women to have access to inclusive physical activity programmes.
  • The barriers they encounter must be identified and facilitators are required to tackle and overcome said barriers.

Research is part of our DNA. Sheila Romero, GaituzSport R+D+i Area Manager and Juan Jauregizar, GaituzSport Administration Manager took part in the 17th International Congress of the Spanish Association of Social Research Applied to Sport, AEISAD, held on 3rd and 4th October in Seville.

The communication “Woman, Disability and Physical-Sports Practice”, presented by our colleague Sheila Romero was acknowledged and chosen as the best by the 17th AEISAD International Congress doctors.

The communication addressed by Sheila Romero and drawn up with Ane Extremiana, Xabier Leizea, GaituzSport Chairman and Juan Jauregizar, is the result of the GaituzSport Research Project “Fostering the inclusion of the disABLED women and/or those with health issues via physical activity and sport.”

Some of the presentation conclusions:

  • It’s essential for disABLED women to have access to inclusive physical activity programmes adapted to the needs of each participant, thus ensuring compliance with their rights.
  • To foster their participation, the physical activity programme must meet specific accessibility and inclusion criteria.
  • Personalised supervised attention is essential to understand each woman’s characteristics and profiles to increase participation levels, creating stimulating attractive programmes and activities for disabled women.
  • Another important factor to bear in mind when fostering participation is the person’s context, identifying the barriers they encounter in physical activity; hence facilitators are required to tackle said barriers.

We continue weaving the inclusion network, researching and sharing knowledge!
