GaituzSport took part in the 3rd Basque Cancer Congress

GaituzSport took part in the 3rd Basque Cancer Congress as part of our alliance and networking with the Association for Parents whose Children have Cancer, i.e. ASPANOVAS. The Congress organised by the Spanish Cancer and Bizkaia Cancer Associations was held at Bizkaia Aretoa de Bilbao on 22nd February.

Xabier Leizea,  GaituzSport Chairman and Kirolene Teacher; and Elena Alonso, PhysEd & Sports Graduate, Master on Health, and Technical Area Manager imparted the “Physical Exercise, the health tool for children and youngsters with cancer” Workshop.

They emphasised during their fantastic presentation that:

– Physical exercise is an essential health and inclusion factor for everyone and a great ally for cancer patients both in prevention and as an integral part of the treatment, not to mention subsequently for survivors.

– It provides great physical and mental health benefits for cancer patients, including:

The reduction of cancer treatment side effects, improvement in quality of life, helps reduce anxiety and depression, improves muscle strength, bone health and range of movement, besides strengthening the immune system plus an inclusion and socialisation channel.

They also highlighted the importance of continuing to expand research lines regarding physical health and cancer, likewise the need to create more inclusive programmes to generate social transference so children and youngsters with cancer can improve their quality of life.

It was a pleasure to provide our grain of salt likewise to share knowledge and experience at the Congress. We should like to express our gratitude to the organisation and everyone who made this 3rd Basque Cancer Congress possible.

GaituzSport was born in 2014 as a Social Innovation Project of the Basque Adapted Sports Federation, to respond to the reflections that emerged from the Euskadi Adapted Sports Plan 2015-2020.
